Moodle is a course management system designed to enable educators in any sector to create quality online courses. Moodle is open source software (OSS) which means the underlying computer code is freely available thus allowing users to alter and customise it to publish their own versions of the learning environment.

Moodle for Schools

By Spring 2008 every school will be expected to have a virtual learning environment in accordance with the DfES e-learning strategy. LearnBuild provide the Moodle Learning Environment to schools and provide a managed service covering all areas of need.
Since Moodle is open source, the main benefit for schools lies in the ability to avoid the expensive license costs associated with commercially available alternatives. As such, money usually spent on license fees can be better invested on development and training hence making the best possible use of public funding.

Moodle benefits from design flexibility which means that educators can personalise their Moodle system and concentrate on areas important to them. Through the user friendly interface, teachers can build their own individual and collaborative learning activities which reflect and enhance their own teaching preferences.

The Moodle VLE provides a host of benefits for the various users. Students can access timetables, homework assignments, additional learning resources, quizzes and discussion forms; anytime, anywhere. Teachers can use a variety of teaching resources therefore enhancing the learning experience for students and assessments can be marked and aggregated within the environment therefore speeding up marking time. Parents are more engaged in the school community and therefore better able to support their children’s learning and monitor more effectively their progress.

LEA Benefits

The DfES strategy wants to achieve a seamless transition for learners when progressing from primary school to secondary school to college to higher education or to the work place. LEA’s are encouraged to adopt a framework for all schools for which they are responsible. This will undoubtedly encourage a collaborative approach between schools including the sharing of teaching resources and the formation of a community of practice thereby driving a good practice model for all schools within that framework

Moodle for Training Providers

What are the benefits to a training organisation?

Training, whether in the classroom or on the job, is limited to a particular group size and to a specific date and time. Choosing to adopt a LMS allows for a potentially unlimited number of distance learners who can access your training, timetables, assignments, learning resources and discussion forums; anytime, anywhere. The resources contained within your environment can also be made freely available or can be purchased for a specified length of time.

Moodle for Businesses

Many businesses possess information that they need to disseminate to employees. This can range from orientation for new employees to internal company training and external qualifications. A Learning Management System enables management to disseminate mass amounts of information simply and efficiently without ever having to re-produce resources thus taking into consideration the environment. Time is also saved through the ability to pass information to every employee at once via the web.
